Verneuil

The Chateau de Verneuil was the family's summer residence between 1804 and 1814, the years during which Tocqueville's father, Herve de Tocqueville, was the town's mayor. According to Andre Jardin, the author of Tocqueville: A Biography, the Tocqueville family inherited 1/12 of the chateau, and bought the rest from other heirs. Jardin noted that the family loved to discuss literature, philosophy and history in the parlor, but stayed away from politics.

Today the chateau is known as Notre Dame de Verneuil, and serves as a private high school. Click on the photos to learn more about the Chateau de Verneuil.
